Altman: Scott cost FL 50,000 Jobs, $2.4B and High-Speed Rail

By DONNA BALANCIA TALLAHASSEE -- Florida's Sen. Thad Altman (R-Rockledge) has accomplished much since getting elected to the Florida Senate in 2008. He has worked to help Florida's military families, he promotes space exploration, and he is an avid supporter of the restaurant and tourism industries. His one regret: He couldn't do more to keep in Florida a high-speed rail, a project that he says could have employed 50,000 people -- many of them displaced aerospace workers. The project which was cancelled last March, still represents a sore spot for Altman, who waged a court battle to keep the Florida portion of the project alive. Altman says Gov. "A great accomplishment of our bar is that, given this economy, most bar associations are losing members, but we've increased membership by 10 percent," said Hartley, president of the Dade County Bar. Small firms are a growing percentage of the legal profession as a whole, that's where we've seen the increase." Hartley, a litigator focusing in bankruptcy and creditors rights at Akerman Senterfitt, said the increase in smaller firms is a result of a changing economy and the need for attorneys to be more creative in their approach to the practice of law. Sandusky’s Lawyer Got A Teenage Girl Pregnant When He Was 49

As if this scandal needed to get any more twisted, The Daily is reporting that Jerry Sandusky's lawyer, Joe Amendola impregnated a 17-year-old girl when he was 49. In 1996, Amendola was 17-year-old Mary Iavasile's lawyer for her emancipation petition, according to court documents. The girl's mother, Janet Iavasile told The Daily her daughter gave birth to Amendola's baby before she was 18. They were married in 2003, but are now separated. Merck Agrees to Settle New York’s, Florida’s Vioxx Claims

Nov. 14 (Bloomberg) -- Merck & Co, which paid $4.85 billion to resolve patient lawsuits contending its Vioxx painkiller caused heart attacks, settled claims by New York and Florida alleging the company misled state officials about the drug’s safety, a court filing showed. Lawsuit Settled by Three Former Directors at Military Body Armor Supplier

Jack Humphrey, Regulatory journalist POMPANO BEACH -- Three former directors have agreed to more than $1.6 million in monetary sanctions to settle charges by the US Securities and Exchange Commission alleging they were involved in an accounting fraud at a major supplier of body armor to the U.S. military and law enforcement agencies. The settlements agreed to by Cary Chasin, Jerome Krantz and Gary Nadelman – former members of the board of directors at Pompano Beach, Fla.-based DHB Industries – would impose permanent officer-and-director bars in addition to the monetary sanctions.
