Miami Madam Gets One-Day Prison Sentence

The so-called madam of the Miami Compan­ions escort ser­vice, who faced a year in prison for helping run a massive prostitution agency, today received a one-day prison sentence for her crime. The government had argued for a 12-month-plus-one-day prison sentence for Miami Companions co-owner Laurie Carr. But the judge concluded that prison was not the best place for the single mother. Carr, dressed in a form-fitting solid black dress today, pleaded for leniency, and said she's a changed woman. “The lifestyle that I led in my past was absolutely despicable,” Carr said at her sentencing hearing, maintaining that she had changed even before her arrest last summer. “The most important thing to me is my son and taking care of him.” She later added, “I would just ask for mercy and grace.” U.S. … [Read more...]

State Filing: Federal Judge’s Death Penalty Decision Wrong

By DOTTIE PARIS, TFLJ Features Editor MIAMI -- A new court filing by the Florida attorney general indicates mistakes were made by the federal judge who declared Florida's method of imposing the death penalty unconstitutional. The ruling should be reversed on those grounds, according to the state attorney general's filing. In the filing, Assistant Attorney General Leslie Campbell said U.S. District Judge Jose E. Martinez' ruling would affect all Florida death cases.  The federal decision comes under scrutiny during the Casey Anthony murder trial, which has attracted the interest of the nation. The state is asking Martinez to reverse his opinion in order to keep the sentencing system and also to prevent a death row inmate from getting a life prison sentence. The government has requested a 12-month-plus-one-day prison sentence for Miami Compan­ions co-owner Laurie Carr, But Carr's lawyer, Oscar Rodriguez, is asking for a lighter sentence, arguing in court documents that Carr's cooperation in the case provided the government with "serious leads," and that she needs to be free to raise her child and improve her life.
