William and Mary wins Stetson's National Pretrial Competition

STAFF REPORT GULFPORT, Fla. A team of students from the College of William and Mary School of Law won Stetson University College of Laws third annual National Pretrial Competition Oct. 8-9 in Gulfport, Fla. The Florida Bar's Young Lawyers Division co-sponsored the competition with Stetson. College of William and Mary law student Johanna Orleski was named Best Advocate in both the final and semifinal rounds of competition. Chapman University School of Law won the Best Brief Award. Thirteen law schools from around the nation sent students to compete on Stetson Laws campus in Gulfport . It was the first time the College of William and Mary School of Law participated in the competition. Civil Rights Group Targets President During Miami Fundraiser

By JOHN GIVENS MIAMI, FL -- GetEQUAL -- a national lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) civil rights organization -- unleashed a barrage of protests by air, land, and sea targeting President Obama for his failure to sign an executive order halting the discharges of gay and lesbian servicemembers under the militarys Dont Ask, Dont Tell law. President Obama attended a star-studded Democratic Party fundraiser at NBA star Alonzo Mournings bayfront estate. During the hour and a half President Obama was at Alonzo's home for this big-money, Democratic Party fundraiser, LGBT activists confronted him at every turn, demanding that he finally show some leadership and stop the discharges of openly gay and lesbian servicemembers by signing an executive order. OCBA Happy Hour benefits Second Harvest Food Bank

By DOTTIE PARIS The Orange County Bar Association will host its annual Joint Happy Hour on Thursday, November 4, 2010, from 5:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m. at Ember, 42 W. Central Ave., Orlando, FL 32801. The event is sponsored by Westlaw. The OCBA and other local voluntary bar associations gather each fall for an enjoyable evening of drinks, appetizers and socializing to benefit a local charity. This year, as last, proceeds from the event will benefit Second Harvest Food Bank in Orlando. Last year the bars donated 750 pounds of food and raised $1,000 for the food bank. The nominal admission fee goes a long way to helping those in our community who are most in need of assistance: $10 for OCBA and voluntary bar members + a donation of a non-perishable food item; $15 for non-members.
