Judge: Crist Can Keep Spending

FT. MYERS -- Senior Collier County Circuit Judge Jack Schoonover denied two contributors attempts to stop Gov. Charlie Crist from using millions of dollars he collected in Senate campaign contributions. Tom Grady, attorney for Linda Morton and John Rood, said that the almost $10 million that was donated is now being used against the Republican candidate Marco Rubio. Morton, of Naples, and Rood, the Republican Party of Floridas finance chairman, said they felt cheated after Crist went from Republican candidate for U.S. Senate to independent. The plaintiffs are going to classify the case as a class action. … [Read more...]

FRLA Selects Law Firms to take on BP

TALLAHASSEE -- Weitz & Luxenberg, Levin Papantonio, and Cooney & Conway have been selected to represent the Florida Restaurant and Lodging Association's member hoteliers and restaurateurs affected by the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. Our Association believed it could avoid litigation, hoping that the BP claims process would fairly and fully compensate our collective losses, said Carol Dover, President and CEO of the Florida Restaurant and Lodging Association. But as the BP claims process denied requests for emergency payments and/or paid merely pennies on the dollar in interim payments to our members, we realized we had to seek legal counsel now to protect our membership and the future of Floridas tourism. This consortium of firms are well-known for complex and mass tort litigation and for litigating against the largest corporations in the world and have pledged to work … [Read more...]

Primary Elections 2010

MIAMI - Representative Kendrick Meek defeated Jeff Greene to win Florida's Democratic U.S. Senate primary, setting up a three-way battle for Senate on Nov. 2. Meekfaces Gov. Charlie Crist and conservative Republican Marco Rubio in the fall. In a tough Republican gubernatorial primary, Rick Scott edged Attorney General Bill McCollum by 46 percent to 43 percent. He faces Alex Sink, Florida's chief financial officer, who breezed to victory over healthcare executive Brian Moore. Meek won the Democratic Senate primary with 57 percent of the votes against 31 percent for Greene, an outsider who has increasingly earned media attention more for misadventures aboard his yacht than for his political goals. Rubio easily won the Republican Senate primary against unknowns. Earlier this year, Crist broke with the Republican Party to make an independent bid for the Senate. Florida is one of several … [Read more...]

McCollum Objects to BP Claims Process

Attorney General Bill McCollum sent a letter to Ken Feinberg expressing strong objections to the claims process Feinberg has announced to replace the BP Claims Process which has been in place since the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. Feinberg takes over the BP claims process, which will be known as the Gulf Coast Claims Facility. The Attorney General specifically noted that, despite weeks of efforts by his office and other attorneys general, the protocol falls far short of even the minimal protections mandated by the Oil Pollution Act of 1990, directly contradicts many of Feinbergs own public statements regarding the claims process, and appears to violate the law. The appointment of an independent Administrator of a facility to process the Deepwater Horizon claims of individuals and businesses was meant to replace and improve upon the claims process that BP had implemented, the attorney … [Read more...]
