Griffin Named Leader in the Law

ORLANDO, Fla -- Melanie Shoemaker Griffin has been named a 2010 Leader in the Law by the Florida Association for Women Lawyers. She was recognized during a special ceremony held last month for the honorees. Established in 1951, the Association serves as the statewide voice for Floridas women lawyers and a communication resource for its 27 chapters throughout the state. In addition, Ms. Griffin has been elected to serve as the President-Elect for the Central Florida Association for Women Lawyers. Her exemplary volunteer service to the legal profession and the central Florida community has extended throughout the region for the past three years. She was recognized as a 2010 Florida Legal Elite Up & Comer by Florida Trend magazine, and selected by her peers as a 2010 Super Lawyers Rising Star. Green Groups Block Cargill's Florida mining

FORT MEADE -- Environmental groups have sued to block the expansion of a fertilizer companys Florida operations, but closing Mosaic Cos new phosphate extraction operations in Fort Meade could result in a layoff of more than 200 people, the company said. Groups including The Sierra Club, are seeking a preliminary injunction against Mosaic -- a Plymouth, Minn.-based company, majority-owned by Cargill Inc. -- to halt the extraction process necessary for production. If U.S. District Judge Henry Lee Adams Jr. sides with the groups, Mozaic said it would likely cease operations for economic reasons. The Sierra Club was among two others who sued the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers calling into question the Corps decision to issue a wetlands permit for an extension of the mine in South Fort Meade. Actions Against Drywall Distributor Continue

MIAMI -- Colson Hicks Eidson and Krupnick Campbell Malone Buser Slama Hancock Liberman & McKee have filed class actions against Miamis Banner Supply Co., which is accused of distributing tons of defective drywall throughout the state. The action brings in Florida homeowners who got their drywall through Banner. The suit says Banner was negligent in that the company knew the drywall was defective, but failed to warn consumers. The drywall has been giving off fumes that corrode metal appliances and cause health threats. Banner lost a suit by homeowners in Coconut Grove, Armin Seifart and Lisa Gore-Seifart, who had the drywall built into their home. Ervin Gonzalez, of Colson Hicks Eidson and Mike Ryan, of Krupnick Campbell are leading the lawsuits. Merlin's Pettinato Honored by AAJ

TAMPA -- Attorney David J. Pettinato of Merlin Law Group will be honored in front of his peers at the American Association of Justices 2010 Annual Convention. Pettinato is a recipient of the Wiedemann & Waysocki Award which honors attorneys for their commitment to their profession and support for improving the civil justice system. The Wiedemann & Wysocki Award was established in honor of Fritz Wiedemann and James Anthony Wysocki, two New Orleans-based attorneys and active leaders of the American Association for Justice who died in a plane crash while traveling to an AAJ event. Pettinato has been advocating for the rights of policyholders as a plaintiff attorney for Merlin Law Group for six years.
