A Florida law no longer permits the common practice of transferring real estate property to a wholly owned company to avoid payment of documentary stamp tax on real estate sales in the state. "Just before the real estate bubble escalated, buyers could often be found structuring transactions in such a way that one could pay more tax conveying an $80,000 condo than a $50 million office building," said Mario A. Iglesias, a shareholder and real estate attorney with Roetzel & Andress of Fort Lauderdale, Fla. "The approach, which started in 2005 with the Florida Supreme Court decision in Crescent Miami Center v. Mateer's Frank Pierce Named President of FDLA

Orlando, Fla. Francis Pierce, a partner at the Mateer Harbert law firm, has been named president of the Florida Defense Lawyers Association (FDLA). Pierce has been involved with FDLA for more than 30 years.
